Top fashion model Madeline Hayes (Cybill Shepherd) has been robbed blind by her accountant, and must unload the vast empire of businesses bearing her "Blue Moon" brand. Among these is a detective agency that's been losing money hand-over-fist since its creation. QED; liquidate it, she says. Maddie swaggers into Blue Moon Detective Agency and finds it a pit of chaos and incompetence, run by con artist David Addison (Bruce Willis). David infuriates her further by introducing himself with a cheap, obvious come-on. But just as Maddie is about to deliver the killing blow to the whole company, a man turns up dead on the agency's doorstep and, perhaps for the first time, Blue Moon has a real case on its hands, one that will threaten Maddie's life even while it sucks her into the world of private detective work and a love-hate relationship with David.
